WHAT TO SEE AROUND THE CITY OF RIJEKA

Rijeka's surroundings The best thing about staying in Rijeka is that it is well connected and close to some of the most beautiful parts of Croatia. The small town of Kastav is only a 15 minute drive northeast of Rijeka. This medieval town is famous for the old castle where the nobility lived during the 16th and 17th centuries and the charming Lokvina Square with many architectural treasures. On the other hand, the beautiful coastal town of Opatija is less than half an hour's drive from the center of Rijeka. Krk, the largest Croatian island, is only a short drive across the bridge. Visit Vrbnik, a small medieval town located on top of a limestone hill, which stands dramatically above the Adriatic Sea. The town is known for its wine and "Žlahtina" festival, an autochthonous white wine from Vrbnik County. Be sure to add Baška at the top of your list and find out why Krk is perceived as the cradle of Croatian culture. In addition, you will find the best beaches on the island of Krk - from popular tourist beaches in major cities such as Krk, Malinska and Omisalj, to those hidden beaches (Oprna Beach) that are located in smaller places such as Stara Baska.

If you’re an outdoor lover, take a drive (less than an hour) to Risnjak National Park and try out its best known Leska Trail, which takes an intermediate two hours hike to complete or more challenging three hours long Veliki Risnjak trek. Two and half hours drive from Rijeka stand Plitvice Lakes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest national park in Croatia. With easy walking trails, stunning waterfalls, turquoise lakes and most amazing woods, Plitvice National Park is perfect for visitors of all ages.

Riviera Opatija

Opatija is the center of a 30-kilometer-long riviera located between the green slopes of the Učka mountain and the blue sea. Whether you are touring the Riviera with an attractive winding road or a boat, you will be fascinated by the combination of tame landscaped places and untouched wildlife. For the most complete impression, there is the famous coastal promenade Lungomare, as long as 10 kilometers. To visit Opatija, and not to visit the Lungomare, is like going to Rome and not seeing the Pope. From the royal Opatija through the medieval fortified towns to the pastoral villages of Učka, you are only half an hour away from an attractive drive! Location

Grobnik & Čavle

A view worth admiring when you climb the historic Louisiana road to the Buzdohanj plateau from which you can see the Grobnik Alps. Sometimes they are gray, other times green or blue, but the people of Rijeka and their guests may prefer them when they are - snow white. It is a link to the slopes of Platak, a regional sports, recreation and tourist center, and in winter the ski resort is unique in that you ski while looking at the sea. From the lookout point of the City of Grobnik there is a beautiful view, and if that is not enough for us, we can go down to the Grobnik Airport and see all the beauty and splendor of the municipality of Čavle and beyond in one flight.  Location

Bakar

Bakar, 13 kilometres from Rijeka, is one of the oldest towns in the northern Adriatic and was granted the status of royal town by Maria Theresa in 1779. It was built like an amphitheatre on a hill and its historical nucleus was declared a cultural monument in 1968. You will remember Bakar by its flavours as well - the famous sparkling wine “Bakarska vodica” made from a specific Beline vine grown on stone walls built by diligent farmer’s hands - dry stone walls, recently declared an ethno zone and entered in the cultural register. Another famous product is the Bakar “baškot”, a toasted or fresh baked product shaped in a circle...

Kastav

Situated, as one poet said “ponad mora, kano soko” ("above the sea, like a hawk"), so similar and yet so different from other towns in this region, with its soul in a nest made of stone, it is large enough for everyone willing to experience it in its wholeness.

Kastav gives something to everyone and at the same time receives something in return. One who has listened once to the echo of their footsteps on the ancient cobblestone that many have walked before returns to it over and over again.

Ski & Pleasure resort Platak

Only half an hour drive from the centre of Rijeka, there is a small family ski resort – Platak, unique for its unforgettable view of the sea. During the winter months it is possible to ski on Platak and then have lunch by the sea in the same day. Except in the winter season, Platak is a very popular destination all year round thanks to its numerous walking and hiking trails. After only few hours of walking along maintained and well-marked hiking trails you will see the peaks of Snježnik and Risnjak with their beautiful outlooks. Gravel roads at Platak are excellent for mountain biking or an easy walk through the nature, and the mountain houses are open during the whole year. Location

National park Plitvice Lake

Plitvice Lakes is the oldest and largest national park in the Republic of Croatia. The park is situated in the mountainous region of Croatia, between the Mala Kapela mountain range in the west and northwest, and the Lička Plješivica mountain range to the southeast.

With its exceptional natural beauty, this area has always attracted nature lovers, and already on 8 April 1949, it was proclaimed Croatia’s first national park. The process of tufa formation, which results in the building of the tufa, or travertine, barriers and resulted in the creation of the lakes, is the outstanding universal value

Fužine & Highlands

The highland riviera.

Fužine is the choice of lovers of nature and active vacations, and those who like to flee from overcrowded tourist spots in the summer but still want to enjoy easily accessible beaches. The Vrelo cave with its mountain spring, lake and abyss is the biggest attraction. As is usually the case, it was discovered by accident in the mid-20th century and because of the lay of the land, with no steps, it is the only tourist cave in Europe accessible to people with disabilities and suitable for children of all ages.  You can take a boat, canoe or kayak across Bajer, and surfers love it because of the frequent wind.

Učka Nature park

Vojak is one of those places you absolutely must not miss. Here, at the highest peak of Učka and the Istrian peninsula you can enjoy the beauty of nature from the lookout - a tower built in 1911 with a view from all four sides. Učka is one of those mountains that ideally combine natural wealth and human activity which began as early as prehistoric times, as evidenced by material finds and archaeological sites.

Since the first climb by mountaineers from Rijeka in 1852, Učka has become interesting to everyone, not just scientists. It has become the favourite spot of alpinists, hikers and tourists on vacation in Opatija.
