If you are planning a trip to Croatia after the busy summer months, September is one of the best times to discover Rijeka and the Kvarner region.
The sea is still warm, the days are usually pleasant, the summer crowds begin to disappear, and you can explore the coast, islands, mountains and historic towns at a much more relaxed pace.
Rijeka is particularly well located for this kind of trip. From the city, you can easily reach Opatija, Grobnik, Gorski Kotar and the island of Krk, making it possible to experience several completely different sides of Croatia without constantly changing accommodation.
Here is our suggestion for a perfect 4-day itinerary from Rijeka in September.
Day 1 – Discover Rijeka and Trsat

Start your trip by exploring Rijeka itself.
Walk through the historic city center and along Korzo, the city's famous pedestrian promenade. Take your time exploring the streets, squares, cafés and restaurants before continuing toward the waterfront.

One of the highlights of the day should be Trsat Castle, located above the city.
From Trsat, you can enjoy spectacular views across Rijeka and Kvarner Bay. The area around the castle is also perfect for a relaxed walk and a coffee break.
In the afternoon, return to the city center and enjoy Rijeka at a slower pace.

September is ideal for exploring the city on foot. The intense summer heat begins to fade, making it easier to combine sightseeing with a relaxed evening by the sea.
Overnight: Rijeka
Day 2 – Opatija, Lovran and the Kvarner Coast

On your second day, head west along the coast toward Opatija.
Once a famous Austro-Hungarian seaside resort, Opatija is known for its elegant historic villas, parks, restaurants and beautiful seaside promenade.
Walk along the famous Lungomare, enjoying views of the Adriatic and the islands of Kvarner.

Continue toward Lovran, a charming coastal town with a historic old center and a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere.

September is a particularly good time to explore this part of the coast. The temperatures are generally more comfortable for walking, while the sea is often still warm enough for a swim.
Take your time. Have lunch by the sea, stop for coffee and enjoy the coastline rather than trying to see everything in a hurry.
Return to Rijeka in the evening.
Overnight: Rijeka
Day 3 – Grobnik and Gorski Kotar

For your third day, leave the coast behind and discover the mountains above Rijeka.
Start with Grobnik, a beautiful area where the landscape quickly changes from the Mediterranean coast to mountains and green countryside.
The Grobnik area is perfect for travelers who enjoy nature, photography, hiking, cycling and scenic drives. The combination of mountain landscapes and views toward Kvarner makes it a rewarding destination just outside Rijeka.
Continue toward Gorski Kotar, one of Croatia's greenest regions.

Depending on your interests, you can visit places such as Fužine, Lokve or Delnice, explore forests and lakes, or simply enjoy a traditional lunch surrounded by nature.

This is one of the great advantages of staying in Rijeka: within a relatively short drive, you can experience the Adriatic coast and the Croatian mountains on the same trip.
By late afternoon, return toward Rijeka.
Overnight: Rijeka
Day 4 – Discover the Island of Krk

Your final day is reserved for one of the highlights of the Kvarner region — the island of Krk.
Krk is particularly easy to visit from Rijeka. The island is connected to the mainland by the Krk Bridge, making it a convenient and scenic destination for a full-day road trip.
Start your day in Krk Town, the historic main town of the island.
Krk Town
Walk through the old streets, explore the medieval town center and enjoy a coffee by the waterfront before continuing your island road trip.
Krk Town combines history, traditional stone architecture, restaurants and a beautiful seaside setting, making it an excellent introduction to the island.
Punat
Continue toward Punat, one of the island's best-known seaside towns.
The sheltered bay and surrounding landscape make it a pleasant place for a short walk, coffee or lunch by the sea.
From Punat, continue along the island toward Vrbnik.
Vrbnik
Perched on a rocky hill above the Adriatic, Vrbnik is one of the most picturesque historic towns on Krk.
Its medieval old town is known for narrow stone streets, beautiful sea views and the local Žlahtina white wine, produced from the indigenous grape variety of the Vrbnik area.

Take a short walk through the historic center, discover the famous narrow Klančić street, and stop for a coffee or lunch overlooking the sea.
Vrbnik is an ideal place for a relaxed stop during your Krk road trip, especially in September when the summer crowds have eased.
Baška
If you still have enough time, continue toward Baška, on the southern part of the
island.

Baška is famous for its long beach, dramatic surrounding hills and beautiful views over the Adriatic. It is one of the island's best-known destinations and a wonderful place to finish your exploration of Krk.
Even in September, the landscape can still feel very much like summer, while the atmosphere is considerably calmer than during July and August.
End the Day by the Sea
After exploring Krk, return toward Rijeka in the late afternoon or evening.

The drive itself is part of the experience, with beautiful views of the Kvarner landscape along the way.
And just like that, in four days you have experienced a city, the coast, the mountains and an island!
Why Visit Rijeka in September?
The beauty of this four-day trip is that you do not have to choose between a city break and a beach holiday.
You can have both!
You can spend one morning walking through historic Rijeka, another day beside the sea in Opatija, the next surrounded by forests in Gorski Kotar and finish your trip exploring the island of Krk.
September makes the experience even better.
The intense summer heat begins to fade, the roads and promenades are generally less crowded, and there is more time to enjoy the places you visit.
The Adriatic is still warm, and many restaurants, cafés and attractions remain open.
For travelers who want to experience Croatia rather than simply spend their entire holiday on one beach, this is an ideal time of year.
Why stay in Rijeka for all four nights?
You could move from one destination to another every night, but there is really no need. Rijeka is an excellent base for exploring the entire Kvarner region.
From the city, you can easily reach the coast, the mountains, Grobnik and the island of Krk. That means you can unpack once, settle in and spend each day discovering somewhere different.
At Rijeka Apartments Terra, we offer several accommodation options depending on the kind of trip you are planning.

Four days, four different experiences
What makes this itinerary special is the variety.
Day 1: Rijeka – history, culture and city life.
Day 2: Opatija and Lovran – the elegant Kvarner coast.
Day 3: Grobnik and Gorski Kotar – mountains, forests and nature.
Day 4: Krk Island – medieval towns, beaches and the Adriatic.
And you can do all of it while staying in the same accommodation.
That is why Rijeka is much more than a stopover.
It is the perfect starting point for discovering the Kvarner region.
